We did it once at E-M some years ago when we built a kit powered by a supercharged 4.6 Ford. I can not remember the name of the manufacture, but they made us cats the same diameter as the sidepipe casing. We used a muffler insert and pressed the cat in front of the muffler. Each end of the case was then bevelled to hold the muffler and cats in place. A threaded bung was welded on to the inside of the collector for the Co2 sensor and the whole thing was welded together in our jig. It must have worked as we never were told otherwise. I'm sure any kit car manufacture that makes their own sidepipes could do the same. Good luck!
