The typical ear plug drops the DB by about 30, not taking into account the range and other factors, just a general statement. Many plugs do less. Depending on how much noise is in the environment 30 DB down from that will help, but it may not be enough to prevent damage. DB at a given level for a given time (there are charts) will do damage. The louder it is, the shorter the time.

I wear ear muffs when I'm working, I think they are better, and the very best ear plugs I can find when I'm driving the Cobra.
