Trevor,

Get yourself a gear-reduction starter if you need to replace your starter. They are available anywhere from 3:1, 4:1, 4.4:1 and even 5:1. The gear-reduction ones are smaller, and will spin higher compression motors more easily, especially when the motor is hot. The higher the compression, the more gear you need.

They should generally last a lifetime. I like the RobbMc starter, a 5:1 gear. They are expensive, (robbmcperformance.com) but living in a hot climate and running 11:1 compression, I want a strong starter.
