A friend and I drove a slant 6 Valiant from Montreal to LA and back in 1965 on the old Route 66. We went through some water in Detroit and the engine stopped (Chrysler products really loved to stop in the rain). New plug wires and some other stuff got us back on the road a few hours later.
We stayed one extra day so we basically had to drive back non-stop. We made it from LA to our homes outside Montreal in 53 1/2 hours. Oh, did I mention that I got a speeding ticket in Grants, NM at 5:00AM Sunday morning? No problem, the court house was open accepting bonds.
Back on the road again after a very brief stop to post a $10 bond.
