Very early cars (> chassis ~100) had the fans mounted through the radiator (always on the back side). After that, they were mounted to the top shroud and the bottom tray through vertical brackets. We had very few problems with the pins going through the core, but it always made me nervous.
I wouldn't consider safe or reliable using the through-the-core method with the aluminum radiators we currently use.
