A 390 is also OK if you want an FE V8. Plenty of power, reliable, and durable. Very few people can tell the difference from the outside (and a 390, from the outside, is identical to the 428 that was installed in roughly two-thirds of the original Cobra 427 cars).

By the way, using the original bore and stroke measurements of the engines, the 390 is an honest 390. The 427 is really a 425, and the 428 is really . . . . are you ready for this? . . . . a 427!!!
