On my car, I tossed the supplied part in the trash, and made my own out of 1/2" x 3/4" alum bar stock. I drilled and tapped two 1/4" holes towards the center. Those holes match the FFR holes that FFR drills through the trunk deck. I ran two bolts from the inside of the trunk and into the bar. No reason you can't do that on your car.
Towards the ends of the bar I drilled and tapped two more 1/4" holes. These match the license plate holes.
The plate had been mounted that way for years, with no evidence of ever coming loose.

Thank you for the help Bob, I will check out another home depot type store to see if I can find some thicker aluminum.
