If you are able to bypass the solenoid and it will start, you can be assured the solenoid is bad. Replace it. The Buss bar that makes contact inside gets arced up and results in poor contacts that will not carry the necessary current for the Starter. Some of the remote solenoids can be disasembled and the contacts filed clean, or the bar flipped over to restore its function.
