STREET racers face life imprisonment after the State Government made drag racing a criminal rather than traffic offence.
Hoons caught street racing face a maximum of three years in prison and a one-year loss of licence.
Road Safety Minister Jack Snelling said legislation passed yesterday means a subsequent street racing offence would attract a maximum penalty of five years' jail and a minimum loss of licence for three years.
"If an offender causes death or serious harm while street racing, they'll now face a maximum penalty of life imprisonment," he said.
"Under this legislation, they'll be treated like the serious criminals they are because the results of their street racing antics can have consequences lasting a lifetime."
