I just put my 7 tear old female Pit down last weekend (way to young) after a year of treatment for cancer. I spent 25k on her treatment, and she got a good quality year of extra life. Without the treatment she would not have lasted more than a couple months. She only had a couple bad days during the last year. The money was well spent IMO.
I just found out two days ago that my 13 year old Pit may have liver cancer. It's been a tough week. I feel your pain. My dogs are part of my family. I would do anything for them. Your dog sounds like he has had a good long life. That is what I try and focus on. Good luck.
