You are absolutely correct! Most clutch applications that I have seen over the years were bronze pilot bushings. Very little lube, if any, is needed. You want the input shaft to stop spinning at the proper time. Too much lube can keep the input shaft moving. That is what causes a grind into reverse. Very seldom does a pliot bushing wear out and become a problem. They work just fine.
