I already have it done and in the diff housing. I didn't add a drain hole. Since I use the bottom of the housing as a jack point, I was a bit reluctant to add a drain plug there. My gear ration is one that does not require the teeth to be timed, I liked Brent's suggestion to pull the pinion to drain it.
