Not sure about tough. I don't know if this engine has ever seen much service at all. There is a complete lack of wear all over the engine - pistons, bores, crank. One of the main bearings shows some minor signs of wear but that is it (apart from the damage to No.2 - which is effectively cosmetic). Even the bores had very little lip on the top of the cylinder. I wiped off the carbon deposits and dropped the pistons - easy. No need to machine or scrape the lip off. I'v only ever rebuilt a couple of engines but this is the best I've seen. So, yes, they are either tough or this one has done very little work ... or maybe a bit of both.
