I did a similar thing once when I was a young man when I was rebuilding my uncles 351C. I can't remember the details but I believe it was an
oil pump rod that for some reason came out with the distributor and then dropped back down the hole. It was missing the retainer clip. Just pull the pan and then you won't worry about it.
