I don't believe that to be the case because there were a couple racing without hardtops at Le Mans. I assumed it to be simply because they were faster with a roof i.e. better aerodynamics.

All the Cobras racing at Goodwood were 289s, which didn't originally have the fully exposed side pipes of the 427 Cobras.

I don't ever recall seeing a 427 Cobra in classic racing, which I attributed to them not getting FIA homologation in period, although I have seen 427 Cobras with FIA HTP papers.
