When replacing the boot you can sometimes make a little adjustment to the location of the trim ring by making new holes in the tunnel. This will move the boot so equal pressure is exerted on the shifter. I've seen a few tunnels with the shifter hole seriously offset position from the actual shifter. Centered is the prefered installation, with equal rubber boot resistance in the forward and reward gear positions. The alternative is the leather or NOMEX shifter boots if you offset is extreme......
