The early cars had the "Triumph" style "T" key type of latch with a hinged cover that you lifted and then inserted the "T" key and turned. Not handy on a race car, so the "T" key was replaced with a "wing" permanently attached to the latch so crew would not need to fumble with a key to open the bonnet.
