And about four or so sponsor decals looks about right. Less is better. The cars back in the day had very few. More than that looks like a NASCAR stocker or a modern drag car to me.

I agree. And if you are going to use sponsor decals, it only seem right to actually use the product that you are advertising. Sorry, but a GoodYear decal on a Cobra sporting Yokohoma tires don't cut it for me. It would be like putting Chevrolet emblems on a Mustang.
