I know a guy that goes to these things all the time. He does occasionally find some neat valuable items but for the most part it is junk someone else did not want to haul off. Think about it, if you had $500K worth of stuff like Gold bars would you put it in a storage unit?

He says that when he does find something it is very rare that there is a big gain to be made on the resale. Most of the time it is due to a family death and no one knows the storage even exist.

When you lease a storage unit you have to provide a contact number for someone other than yourself should something happen, but storage companies are not (or at least were not in the past) required to notify anyone other than the person whom signed the lease of the pending auction.
