It's really a perceived image or safety issue. If you drive with a passenger often, its a good idea. If you track the car often a minimum of one will be required, 2 if you take an instructor or passenger. If you're by yourself most of the time it's you call. They didn't originally have them but they make the car look racey so they are considered necessary by most as we all see ourselves as a faux Ken Miles when we get behind the wheel.
