Most use a headlight bucket for the headlights.

The inner guard protection I used was similar to the wet suit idea. Just an adhesive light rubber.

The bodies usually have the guard and inner guards moulded as one. Take a look at a few bodies in kit form and you will see the inner panel between the engine, upper suspension and guard - all in one. Footwells are separately moulded in.
