If the failure is something that causes the trans to not build pressure, I would not be surprised to see a high fluid level. It would be similar to checking trans level with the engine off.

It is a realtively easy trans to change. I did my wifes 2000 Silverado some years back in 2-3 hours. It had just shy of 200k miles and the filter fell out in the pan. It lost 4th. The GM crate trans was less than $1500.
