The street cars probably started out with something that looked right, but I think that when they started to race the cars it was evident that you cannot clearly see the rev counter, so they raised it up to give a better view through the steering wheel.
Just a theory? I guess someone who knows the history better than I will have a more plausible theory.

Hi Steve. Sounds logical, but pics of early cars show the 'horizontal' layout...
There must be some reason why some cars went away from what looks like a more practical layout....?
