Notwithstanding chas' reply, the side oiler was designed to combat
oil starvation to the main bearings on NASCAR superspeedways back in the day. Not necessary for the vast majority of applications. That being said, good FE blocks are getting harder to find, making the aftermarket blocks more attractive. It just so happens that two out of the three aftermarket blocks are cast and machined as side oilers. Hope this helps
