Either the Golf or BMW should be fine. I've owned a few Golfs and they should provide more than enough room for your needs. The smallest version is the VW Polo and the Golf is the 'compact'. I've driven across France, 4-up with two weeks of luggage (packing as an art form) and return 55mpg from a diesel version. They cover the ground and are comfortable on long trips...
