They work GREAT...when they work.
They have the highest defective return rate among the major vacuum brands, and this is a good reason why you can find so many great deals on refurbished Dysons.
So when they work, they work great. That's a plus. Dyson also has excellent customer service, so when it does break, you won't/shouldn't have a problem getting a replacement vac. On the flip side, when the vacuum stops work, it's not such a great thing.
FWIW, the pivots/joints aren't the problem. The motors usually burn out.
