I'm going the same way on I5 through Santa Nella, but we are towing four cars down with a detour and a few stops afterwards. My preference would be driving the Cobra taking 37>101>CA-1 with a quick right turn just after the Golden Gate through Ocean Beach then South. If you turn immediately, and don't keep going on 101; get straight to CA-1 its not that bad as long as you don't have buckboard suspension. We've taken this route many times in the Cobras smooth sailing all the way to Monterey. Fun drive.
