I had the same problem with a 351C I shoehorned into a Mercury Comet (essentially the same car as the Ford Maverick).

I went with the remote oil filter on the inner fenderwell, but used a second filter, an Oberg "sandwich" type filter, downstream from the cannister type for better filtering efficiency.

In over 10,000 miles, not once did I have to even clean the filter screen on the Oberg...the cannister did a very good job. I used Wix filters, they have a very good reputation here in the U.S.
