if it's that thin, your right an insert would be useless.
the frame on my car is much thicker on the sideposts than 1/8 inch. and i have the standard cobra frame.

at 1/8 inch that would give you 4 threads of engagement on a 10-32 thread
maybe an oversize self tapper might give the extra grab needed
