The ironic thing is - one can have a kit Cobra built or build one yourself and go for an SB100 smog exemption - but, any 'normal' car or truck 1976 or newer cannot be exempted. Seems more than passingly strange. I'm I missing something?

Not missing a thing.
The smog stuff on the '76 is ugly...stuff like a smog pump. I'm not giving up on it by any means.
