Assuming it is a LSD, it might be easier to just put new gears in his existing set-up. He can install 3.70 in his differential without changing the posi unit.

Anything with a steeper gear is going to be pretty old and will probably need bearings replaced etc anyhow. Just spend the money and get his done right.
