Are you talking about the indicator switch? As with a Healey 3000, early TR, or just about any early '50s British car, there is a stator tube running the length of the column that keeps the steering wheel centre stationary whilst turning the wheel. The chrome 'lever' attached to this is turned to right or left to operate the indicators (US = turn signal?). The cancelling mechanism is hidden behind it.
The MkII used a VW indicator switch mounted on the column.
