Forget originality, if they bug you, remove the coating -- it's a snap. I had the red/blue fittings on my remote
oil filter fitting and, after a while, I changed my liking. Fifteen minutes after taking a Dremel tool steel brush attachment to it and,
voilą. It would have taken me longer to have actually changed out the fittings themselves. Here are the before and after shots:
