Default Super Snake GT500 scheduled for Mecum auction in May

I was reading an old Brad Bowling story but though he said it had several owners between the airline pilots that bought it in Texas and the current owner Richard Ellis, he didn't say if it ever sold for a bargain price to some of those intermediate owners. I would think that since Ford never showed it at a major car show and Goodyear didn't show that promotional tire testing film widely there was a chance it was unknown as to its special role and might have changed hands for $5000 or so. Apparently despite half a dozen owners it only had 26,000 miles on it when Ellis bought it. Usually all those years later a car has been run around the clock at least once. Anyway I think he'll get a good price for it because it's so well documented, I'm just curious to know if it ever was thought of as just another backyard custom ("Hey, look he got the stripes wrong.")
