In Britain at least, racing cars of the period usually had dashboard switches for the fuel pumps. Racing Austin Healeys used twin electric fuel pumps with no mechanical, usually with a toggle switch for each on the dash and the pumps plumbed in parallel, running one at a time. Thus if one failed the other could be flicked on without interrupting forward motion!
