When you say ford solenoid, is that the type that was used to actually power the starter itself? Otherwise you only need a 30 amp basic headlight relay. The main problem was voltage spikes from the solenoid creating pitting in the ignition switch. You try touching the signal wire to the solenoid when you release the starter, it can act like a coil.
