the AN nomenclature refers to the tube size it is for. nothing to do with the nut size...for instance a #12 AN is converted to 12/16 or 3/4 tube

a #8 AN is 8/16 or 1/2 tube

the threads are also a standard. a #12 AN usually takes a 7/8 wrench, but it can and does vary from manufacturer to manufacturer
