Roger Bolick had e-mailed me this:

"Believe you'll find that the door vinyl will not go on properly
unless a strip of metal is used. The vinyl just tucks around this, then
the screws pass through vinyl-metal strip-vinyl-tube.

Vinyl or leather. I believe your photo shows this, as the material
appears to continue past the center of the tube and butts into the door
skin. Keeps the material "pulled" all around the door, otherwise it will
pucker at the screws after a few years. Likely the strip needs to be lightly
glued to the vinyl as you wrap it along the curve."

Thanks Roger. Great observation. I was reaching the same conclusion as I looked at the doors this morning. I was going to use a strip of plastic, but a strip of thin aluminum could be bent to shape and would hold the curve during the glueing process.

I'm making progress.
