I wrap one arm around the bottom of the steering wheel and pull on it while hitting the top of the steering wheel with the bottom of my other hand. Be sure and put the nut back on loosely so the wheel doesn't hit you in the chest. Sometimes you have to hit it a number of times. Works every time.
