(CNN) - BMW is recalling thousands of cars over a problem with the power braking system.

The recall affects roughly 76,000 cars in the U.S., out of a total of 176,000 worldwide.

The carmaker said a glitch with the power brake pump could lead to issues with power braking assistance.

The recall covers several 2012 to 2014 model years equipped with two-liter, four-cylinder turbocharged engines.

The company said only a small number of owners have complained about the trouble.

BMW is notifying owners affected by the recall by mail.
