My garage is not like yours, but it does have several vertical supports protruding from the walls. I also debated whether to accent them or paint them like the walls. In the end, I painted them like the walls and I'm happy with the results. Here's brief video panning around my garage. In it you may notice the vertical supports I mentioned.
