could be a switch with loose internals, did you wiggle the shaft up and down when the switch was pulled to the on position? could be slightly arcing inside.....dunno. i had to replace mine a few years ago, going over bumps it would intermittently have an open circuit, wiggling the shaft would flicker the lights.
