I'm one of a few guys who took the plunge and tried to import an old Cobra. Some succeeded and some have been knocked back.
It's best to start by reading this thread
Pre 1989 Import and also the extra thread that's mentioned within it. That will give you an idea of some of the main things to be aware of.

I'm not sure how much you've searched around locally, but there are some great cars on the market (or soon to be) here in Oz, plus some excellent kits available for brand new builds.
