I ran drag radials for 3 or 4 years and never broke a shaft, yet my Dad broke two on his SPF on bfg radial t/a's.
You just have to learn to slip the clutch just right to launch these cars.
With the right technique you can achieve 1.5 sec. 60' times on street tires. Lower on drag radials.

I wouldn't advise popping the clutch at any rpm's. You will just smoke the tires.
