Hi Sambo,

The steering column does collapse It is specially made by Absolute Pace.

From Memory there is a long rivet through the inner and outer shaft that make up the steering column.



Here you can see the outer part of the column which supports the steering shaft as it goes through the firewall of the car to the universal joint then on to the Rack and Pinion .

There is a bearing bolted to the firewall for support .
