It is a really nice drive South on Hwy 1, but that is heading into L.A. and tends to get trafficky. Going North, it goes inland and turns into Hwy 101 about 15 to 20 miles from Santa Barbara until you reach Pismo Beach. The best road is Hwy 1 between Morro Bay and Monterey, but that is a somewhere around an hour away from you and then a 3 hour drive to Monterey and then even if you went back 101, it is still a 3 hour drive back. So I doubt you want to take that long of a drive. Being from L.A. and living in the Monterey area for over 40 years, I am not real familiar with what is around Santa Barbara as far as good driving roads go. I know some great ones both in L.A. and here in the Monterey area though. I know there is a lake near S.B., I think it is Castaic Lake, and I am guessing there are some good windy roads to get there. You might ask someone when you get to S.B. or perhaps email Howard at centralcoastcobras@yahoo.com. He lives in Morro Bay, which is much closer than I am, but still quite a ways south of him. S.B. is really in SoCal; so us Central Coast guys don't know much about the area.

There are a lot of good Wineries both in the Salinas Valley and Carmel Valley, but again, that is pretty far from you. I believe there are some near lake Castaic, but I have not spent any time in the S.B. area since I was a teenager, and that was a looong time ago.

Have a great time.

Mike
