CSX3026 red cobra
Unpainted/black interior, billed to Shelby American on 1/2/65 CSX3026 was finished under work order #15081 as a full competion car, and was invoiced to the Horn- Williams Motor Co. (Dallas, TX) on 3/16/66: “1 competion model,CSX3026, 1966 cobra, silver, $9.650.00” with an additional charge for bronze bushings ($106) and Koni shocks ($240, installed). Fright charges to truck 3026 to Dallas ($185) made Horn-Williams’ final cost $10,281.00, William McNamara (Dallas, TX) specially ordered the cobra in ’66 Buick Riviera color code Z, Silver Green Metallic, and is thought to have raced the car in Europe during ’66 and ’67. A scrutineer’s tag was found in 3026 from Brands Hatch, dated 1/22/67, by the cars next owner. F. Gene Fisher (Carlisle, PA) who bought the car in ’68, by this time, it had been repainted red and featured stainless steel side pipes, Fisher painted the car medium metallic blue with white racing stripes over the hood and front fenders and installed a full-width black roll bar, using 8.5” FIA Halibrands front and rear, Fisher raced 3026 in the northeast region of the SCCA in A/P, establishing track records at Bryar Motorsports Park (NH) and Summit Point (WV) in ’70. The cobra was sold circa ’72 to Curtis Jackson (Oxford, GA) following which it was repainted red and fitted with a street exhaust system while retaining its full roll bar. Investment Motorsports (IL) bought 3026 in ’87 and gave it a thorough rebuild over the next three years with Bill Murray (Longmont, CO) doing some of the work, the car appeared for sale early in ’91 at a price of $825,000, painted Rangoon red and fitted with a competion windscreen, black side pipes, black quick-jacks, a black driver’s roll bar and 6.5”/8.5” FIA Halibrands. It was purchased through George Stauffer/Stauffer Classics (Blue Mounds, WI) by Ken Quintenz/DK Associates (Columbus OH), who advertised the car again in 8/91: “Factory Competion 427 cobra #3026. History in Shelby Registry and in supporting documents, meticulously and perfectly restored by hand using all of the original components of this car. $895,000.” He elected to keep 3026 rather than sell it, and brought it to SAAC-17 (Portland, OR) 7/92 and SAAC-18 (Watkins Glen, NY) 7/93. At the latter, 3026 received a premier award in the Concours competion class. The cobra repeated at SAAC-22 Road America (Elkhart, WI) 7/97. 3026 was available for sale as of early ’97 through Lee Holman of Charlotte, NC. Modified for Vintage Racing with a fuel cell, a dry-sump oiling system on the passenger floor, a roll cage with safety beams in the doors, and other upgrades, 3026 was acquired in ’04 by Symbolic Motors (LaJolla, CA). They sold it to Gary Campilongo (Pleasant, CA). From whom Anthony Boosalis (LaCanada, CA) bought it 3/06. 3026 has been pictured in the Shelby American, #62, P.31; #64, P,41 (bottom); #66, P.27; P. Hazan’s “AC Cobra 260-289-427,” P.66(#16); Rinsey Mills’ “AC Cobra,” P.144 (top); Vintage Motorsport Magazine, 11-12/98, P. 55.
