Chad, how fast do you want to go? Be aware that if your running over 135 mph in the 1/4 you will be req'd to have a full NHRA certified cage and license as well as everything else that goes along with it.
Regarding the auto vs manual, the auto will likely be quicker and easier to control, but you can be plenty quick with a manual if that's what you prefer to run.
Personally, I think there is nothing wrong with running tons of hp as long as your car is set up properly and you exercise some restraint. There are multiple cars here running over 600 hp and handle it just fine. Cheers.
