Just for closure:
Plan moving forwards is to swap the -6 for a -8, and then use the -6 for the return.
I'll keep the pumps as they are for the moment (Car doesn't get run ten-10ths anyway), and swap the Holley out for an Aeromotive or Weldon unit if I encounter any further problems.
If anyone sees any flaws in this, please speak up now or forever hold your peace.
