Hmmm...if they were added later as you said that implies there must be a way to get inside the door. Most ferrules are held on by c-clips or some other type of retainer on the bottom so I'd look harder at gaining access. If you're able to do that, this is what I did:

My ferrules were a bit loose and I didn't like the metal to paint contact, so I picked up some 7/16" neoprene washers at Home Depot and cut them to size (slightly smaller diameter than the head of the ferrules. They were thicker than I wanted so I also used the side of my grinding wheel to make them wafer thin - so, you can't see that there are washers. I also used o-rings on the inside. When I reinstalled them I was able to compress the o-ring a bit against the c-clip for a nice tight fit.
